The Wet Geochemistry lab is home to an array of equipment and facilities to prepare water soil, sediment and geological samples for characterisation and elemental and/or isotopic analysis.
The lab underpins both teaching and research in the Earth Sciences Department with users ranging from Undergraduate 2nd year students through to PGR students as well as current academic and research staff. Previous projects have included leaching experiments from mining waste; identification of microplastics in leachate, surface waters and soil samples; site investigations of contaminated land; anthropogenic water pollution.
The lab is equipped with:
- Three muffle furnaces for LOI and fusions
- 4dp balances in clean weighing room
- One general fume hood and one designated HF scrubbing fumehood, equipped with hotplates
- Distilled water units
- Orbital shaking tables and one water bath orbital shaker
- Magnetic stirring tables
- Centrifuges
- Colorimeters for phosphate, nitrate and ammonia determination
- A range of portable pH/EC probes
- Multiparameter probes (pH/ORP/EC/DO/Turbidity)
- A range of environmental sampling equipment
The lab works closely with the Analytical Geochemistry Laboratory for EA, ICP-OES and ICP-MS analysis.
All work should first be discussed with the Lab Manager and a booking form should be completed.
The lab is also available for 3rd party commercial work and all enquiries should be sent to james.brakeley@rhul.ac.uk
