In the late 1940’s our mother studied at Bedford College, London. In 2005, my brother Terry set up the Elaine Etherton Scholarship in her memory.
Bedford College, in London, opened its doors in 1849 and The Royal Holloway College’s Founder’s Building was unveiled by Queen Victoria in 1886. These two establishments were among the first places, in Britain, where women could access higher education.
In 1900 the colleges became part of the University of London and in 1985 they merged to form what is now known as Royal Holloway.
The Elaine Etherton Scholarship is open to UK students with family income of less than £25,000pa. The scholarship offers a cash amount of £3,500 per year, for the first 3 years of a student’s study.

"As a single mother, this scholarship has taken the burden of some of my struggles away and ultimately given me the encouragement to make that final step towards a better future for myself and my children."
