Creative Approaches for the Creative Industries - Keynote & Q+A

This panel is for all attendees as part of Day 1 of the January Congress.

Whilst you are welcome to book a space on Inkpath if you would like to formally record your attendance, this is not mandatory as this is a core activity of the overall event.

Session Details:

This presentation explores how interdisciplinary research can foster inclusive innovation in the creative industries. Drawing on two AHRC-funded projects – one with Red Earth Theatre (a Derby based theatre company) and one with IMPACD (a Nottingham-based dance company) – it examines how ‘accessible paratexts’ (Mével 2020) can support integrated access throughout creative processes. From captioned immersive theatre for d/Deaf audiences to Easy Language for dancers, these case studies demonstrate how creative-critical collaboration can reshape participation. The talk offers practical insights and methodological provocations for researchers seeking to work across domains, audiences and media, especially those committed to embedding accessibility from the outset.

Speakers / Facilitators:

Pierre-Alexis Mével is Professor of Media Accessibility and Audiovisual Translation at the University of Nottingham. His research interests include creative captions for the screen and for the stage, the translation of nonstandard language varieties, and media accessibility. He teaches subtitling for D/deaf audiences and audio description at the University of Nottingham. He is a fierce advocate for inclusive media-making practices and has a long track-record of working with partners from the creative industries.
