03MAR2025Visual Ethnography Methods Training03 March 2025, 10:00 - 05 March 2025, 16:00Knights Park Campus, Kingston UniversityThis 3-day workshop supports PhD students at early as well as advanced stages of their ethnographic research. Early stages: The workshop will introduce visual ethnography methods. Students will undertake a practical fieldwork exercise, reflect on this activity, and consider the application of methods in their PhD projects. Advanced stages: The workshop will support students in evaluating data gathered from ethnographic fieldwork and disseminating through refereed journals It is possible to join all three days (including fieldwork) or alternatively to join only day 1 or 2.Read more

25MAR2025Reading like a Writer: How Reading Can Improve WritingTue, 10:00 - 12:00OnlineFor researchers, reading takes up hours of time. In that time we hope to increase our knowledge. But if we read only for information we’re actually wasting an opportunity: reading can also teach us how to improve our own writing style and generate confidence in our own voice. In this workshop we’ll look at, and practise, different ways of ‘reading like a writer’. We’ll start with efficient reading – information IS important so how to get the most out of a text. Then we’ll look at critical reading – what questions should you ask of a text? Then ‘emotional reading’ – how authors achieve their emotional purpose; and finally ‘gotcha reading’ – how authors keep us reading.Read more
