Visual Research Methodologies for Creative Practitioners Working with Oral Histories

This in-person workshop (including refreshments and lunch) will introduce students working with oral histories and/or communities to critical and practical possibilities using photography as a research method. It will demonstrate how photography can function as a rigorous, theoretically grounded research tool across diverse fields - from architectural ethnography and medical humanities to participatory visual methods and eco-critical documentary practices. You will gain insight into how different theoretical frameworks and methodologies can shape your own research - and how to develop an approach that bridges creative practice and academic enquiry. Oral history training for PGRs will be shared, as will extensive experience working with community and participatory photography. Techne students will gain from the event's interdisciplinary exchange, its support of methodological innovation, and its strengthening of research training across practice-based and theoretical disciplines. You will benefit from real-world case studies, practical guidance, and opportunities for discussion, which will enhance both your academic development and creative practice.
