Using AI Well: Practical and Ethical AI for Arts and Humanities Doctoral Researchers
Doctoral researchers are increasingly encountering AI tools in their research, writing, teaching, administration, public engagement and career development. You may already be experimenting with tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Elicit, Gemini, Claude, NotebookLM and other emerging AI systems. Or you may be unsure where to begin, what is appropriate, or how to manage the risks. For you as an arts and humanities researcher, AI raises particularly important questions around interpretation, authorship, voice, originality, bias, source quality, intellectual labour, research ethics and the boundaries of acceptable support. This training session will help you move beyond uncritical enthusiasm or blanket avoidance - or somewhere in between! It will give you a rounded understanding of what AI can and cannot do, where it may be useful, where it creates risk, and how to make thoughtful decisions about its use in academic research.
