Archive Research Skills for Doctoral Researchers: Marx Memorial Library & Workers' School

Whether you are planning extensive archival research or simply want to strengthen your skills as a researcher, this workshop offers an excellent opportunity to develop practical expertise while exploring one of Britain's most distinctive specialist libraries and archives. The Marx Memorial Library & Workers’ School is one of the UK's leading specialist libraries and archives for the study of Marxism, socialism, labour history and social movements. Its collections include published works, archives, newspapers, pamphlets, photographs, posters, banners and artefacts documenting subjects such as trade unionism, radical print culture, peace and solidarity campaigns, anti-fascist movements, and the Spanish Civil War. Whether your research focuses directly on these areas or you are interested in developing your archival research skills, the day will provide practical training that is relevant to researchers across the arts, humanities and social sciences. 

You will discover how archives can open up unexpected research directions, from uncovering new perspectives on major industrial disputes and campaigns for workers' rights, to exploring international solidarity movements, political activism, publishing networks and everyday experiences recorded in primary sources.

During the day you will:

• Learn how to locate and access primary source materials, including archives, newspapers, photographs, pamphlets, posters, artefacts and published collections.
• Gain experience using archival catalogues, databases and digital resources to identify relevant materials.
• Develop practical skills in handling and interpreting original archival material.
• Build confidence in evaluating provenance, context and evidential value when working with primary sources.
• Learn how archival discoveries can be incorporated into your own research, whatever your discipline.
• Explore how the Marx Memorial Library's collections may offer unexpected and valuable perspectives for your research interests.

The programme includes:

• An introduction to the history of the Marx Memorial Library and its nationally significant collections, highlighting some of its most fascinating and unique holdings.
• A practical session demonstrating how to search the library catalogue, online databases and digital collections.
• A hands-on archival workshop, providing experience in handling and critically interpreting original documents and objects.
• Case studies from researchers who have used the Library's collections, followed by discussion of how its holdings might connect with participants' own research questions and interests.
