The Messy Coach: Research Manifesto: Rewriting PhD Myths

Struggling with anxieties and negative thoughts about your PhD? Join our interactive workshop designed to help you break free from common (but harmful!) myths, messages and beliefs about PhD life.

In this session, you’ll start by identifying the concerns and challenges that are holding you back in your research. Together, we will then deconstruct and debunk these myths, and explore alternative, practical perspectives on research life that are more empowering and will support you to make more effective, productive progress in your PhD.

You’ll also learn a simple, 3-step method to reframe your anxieties into positive, actionable affirmations. By the end, you’ll leave with a personalised research manifesto that reflects your new motivated mindset.

This is an excellent opportunity to reset your approach to your PhD journey and cultivate a healthier, more productive mindset to fuel your PhD success!

Learning objectives

By the end of the session, participants will have learned:

  • how to recognise what constitutes inaccurate myths about doctoral research and to identify how/if it relates to their own research experience
  • how to articulate, recognise and (re)claim their unique research experiences and practices as authentic, valid and valuable; and to distinguish these from unhelpful, untrue PhD myths
  • how to reframe negative thoughts and beliefs about the PhD into more helpful and constructive thoughts that will support their work and progress
