An Exploration of the London Spoken Word Poetry Community

This research project investigates the London open mic spoken word community with the aim of deepening our understanding of spoken word and its potential for fostering community. By examining this community, the study explores the dynamics of spoken word and its impact on participants and the larger society. The research critically assesses membership boundaries within the community and examines the consequences of these boundaries on both the community itself and the art form. Additionally, this research seeks to understand the use of digital media and how it contributes to the experience of community.
This research adopts an interdisciplinary approach, drawing upon concepts from performance studies, media and communication studies, and community studies. Employing an ethnographic approach, data is collected through participant observation at London spoken word open-mic events, as well as through semi-structured interviews with poets actively involved in the London spoken word scene.
By delving into the intricate dynamics of the London open mic spoken word community, this research project provides valuable insights into the experience of the spoken word community. Through this interdisciplinary investigation, the study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on spoken word and highlights the significance of this art form in contemporary society.
