AHRC Techne funded doctoral student

Corder: Poems for Voyager 1 and life beyond the heliosphere

Royal Holloway, University of London

Year of enrolment: 2016 -

Supervisor: Professor Jo Shapcott

My poetry project is a rewrite and recollection of the Golden Record - a repository of images and sounds carried by the space probe Voyager 1, which recently became the first man-made artefact to enter interstellar space. Drawing on prosody’s capacity to disrupt and subvert “everyday” or normative modes of utterance, it will critique the values and narratives that underpin the selection and arrangement of material for the original Record, consider how such a memorial work might apply to today's culture and technology, and explore how the Record's implicit status as alien object might serve in turn as a basis for the reinvention of poetic practice.
